São Miguel and Terceira in 10 days: crater lakes, Angra and a slower island change

São Miguel and Terceira are a good first pairing when you want volcanic landscapes without making every day a hike. São Miguel gives the trip lakes and a thermal valley; Terceira adds Angra do Heroísmo, pasture viewpoints and basalt coast. Ten days allow two bases and a separate transfer day, with weather-sensitive outings kept movable.

Choose the options that fit your day plan, not every item in the list. Confirm meeting points, pickup areas, extras, accessibility and cancellation terms. Guided visits replace the equivalent independent day rather than sit on top of it.

The route and overnight plan

Spend nights 1-5 on São Miguel; nights 6-9 on Terceira. That is 9 nights, with departure on day 10. Arrival and island changes count as travel days, not full sightseeing days. Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo and Madalena are useful starting points for accommodation research where relevant, not mandatory hotel choices. If flights favour another order, move whole island blocks rather than remove the spare time.

Day 1: arrive in Ponta Delgada

Keep the arrival day for settling in, a waterfront walk and a meal if your landing time allows. Do not attach a prepaid outing to an uncertain flight arrival. The first evening is part of the trip, but it does not need to prove how much of the island you can cover.

Day 2: Sete Cidades

Give the western crater landscape its own day. Check visibility before driving to Vista do Rei, then allow time for the village and lake shore rather than collecting every high viewpoint. If the crater is hidden, change the order instead of waiting indefinitely on exposed ground. The Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo tour with lunch combines the west with Lagoa do Fogo and can replace parts of two independent outings. Compare the current route and pickup before choosing it.

Day 3: Furnas and the tea landscape

Give Furnas a full day for the valley, village and one garden or thermal-pool choice, with lunch kept in the outline. Stay in marked visitor areas around hot ground and check admission arrangements before assuming a bath is included. The Furnas volcano and tea plantation tour with lunch adds the tea plantation in a guided format; its listing identifies Terra Nostra entry as an extra. Choose that version or an independent day, rather than booking overlapping ways of seeing the same valley.

Day 4: Lagoa do Fogo and Ribeira Grande

Choose this central-island day according to visibility and current road or shuttle arrangements. A viewpoint visit and a longer lake walk are different commitments. Check access and the official trail alerts, then select the effort that fits your fitness and forecast. If your guided western day already included the lake, use this time for a modest coastal outing instead.

Day 5: a movable São Miguel day

Recover a missed lake view, choose another coastal area or stay near Ponta Delgada. Nordeste is an alternative if a longer eastern outing suits, not an extra requirement. Keep enough margin that a cloudy viewpoint does not become a failed holiday. The last evening should leave time to pack and confirm the ground transfer before the island change.

Day 6: fly to Terceira

Use the dated SATA schedule to choose this island change before paying for the hotel blocks. Do not assume a daily nonstop service or a convenient connection from the existence of an airport pair. This outline uses flying as its baseline, not a promised ferry from São Miguel. Leave the rest of the day free for airport transfers, luggage, delays and settling in. Do not attach a cave visit, boat departure or mountain reservation to the arrival time.

Day 7: Angra and Monte Brasil

Start with Angra do Heroísmo: streets, the bay and a proper meal before adding Monte Brasil. The wooded volcanic peninsula gives a different scale to the city, but choose a manageable walk instead of treating the whole area as one quick lookout. Leave room to return to the centre rather than combining this with a full island circuit.

Day 8: Serra do Cume, Praia da Vitória and the coast

Choose a viewpoint-and-coast day with Serra do Cume, Praia da Vitória and Biscoitos as possible anchors. Lunch and driving still take time. The Terceira full-day island van tour is an Angra-based way to see island scenery without driving yourself; check the pickup boundary. The From Angra: Terceira full-day island tour is an alternative full-day format, not a second required tour. Compare the two and avoid repeating the same stops. Swimming at Biscoitos remains optional and subject to local restrictions and sea conditions.

Day 9: an optional cave or a weather recovery day

Algar do Carvão is optional only after checking its operator. As checked in October 2026, visits have resumed under special construction conditions, with another suspension expected from late October or November into early 2027. Older island guides may not reflect that notice. If access is unavailable, use the day for Angra, a missed coastal stop or a suitable open walk. Check any alternative cave separately rather than assume it is open or interchangeable.

Day 10: departure, without a final mountain outing

Keep this day for packing, the airport or port journey and onward travel. If a separately ticketed international departure depends on an inter-island service, check the missed-connection risk and whether a buffer night is needed. An attractive fare does not turn separate tickets into one protected journey.

Where to stay and what to organise first

Use compare accommodation on Trip.com separately for each island. Match the exact address to parking, evening meals and your chosen pickup points. A boat from Lajes do Pico is not a boat from Madalena. A car gives freedom only if narrow roads and parking do not turn every outing into work. Check rental terms before assuming a vehicle can move between islands, or arrange separate rentals at each base.

Use compare flights on Kiwi.com for the entire journey, including entry into the Azores and the final departure. Settle the transfers before the hotel dates, then reserve the few activities that need it. Check baggage, connection protection and change costs. This guide quotes no live fare or room availability; transport, stays, meals and admissions remain unpriced for your dates.

Before you walk, swim or book

Check trail alerts and local weather before walking. Pick the effort that suits your group, carry water and rain protection, and never enter a closed route to preserve an itinerary. Pool visits and boat trips depend on the sea as well as the sky. Keep a land-based alternative and read the selected operator’s age, health and mobility limits.
