Terceira and Pico offer a two-island trip without trying to recreate São Miguel’s crater-lake circuit. Start with Angra and open pasture views, then move to Pico for vineyard walls, coastal villages and an optional mountain day. Ten days leave room for the island change instead of turning a flight or ferry into an interruption between paid outings.

The route and overnight plan
Spend nights 1-5 on Terceira; nights 6-9 on Pico. That is 9 nights, with departure on day 10. Arrival and island changes count as travel days, not full sightseeing days. Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo and Madalena are useful starting points for accommodation research where relevant, not mandatory hotel choices. If flights favour another order, move whole island blocks rather than remove the spare time.
Day 1: arrive on Terceira
Keep the first day for the airport journey, settling in and a meal. Do not book a full island outing against the landing time. A calm arrival evening gives the first full day room to work even when the flight or luggage is delayed.
Day 2: Angra and Monte Brasil
Start with Angra do Heroísmo: streets, the bay and a proper meal before adding Monte Brasil. The wooded volcanic peninsula gives a different scale to the city, but choose a manageable walk instead of treating the whole area as one quick lookout. Leave room to return to the centre rather than combining this with a full island circuit.
Day 3: Serra do Cume, Praia da Vitória and the coast
Choose a viewpoint-and-coast day with Serra do Cume, Praia da Vitória and Biscoitos as possible anchors. Lunch and driving still take time. The Terceira full-day island van tour is an Angra-based way to see island scenery without driving yourself; check the pickup boundary. The From Angra: Terceira full-day island tour is an alternative full-day format, not a second required tour. Compare the two and avoid repeating the same stops. Swimming at Biscoitos remains optional and subject to local restrictions and sea conditions.
Day 4: Biscoitos and a smaller coastal day
Use Biscoitos for a smaller coastal day if the previous circuit already covered the eastern side. Seeing the natural-pool landscape does not require swimming. Follow local conditions, and give the afternoon back to a village pause or Angra rather than another cross-island drive. If a guided tour already covered this area, replace the repeat visit with another modest outing.
Day 5: an optional cave or a weather recovery day
Algar do Carvão is optional only after checking its operator. As checked in October 2026, visits have resumed under special construction conditions, with another suspension expected from late October or November into early 2027. Older island guides may not reflect that notice. If access is unavailable, use the day for Angra, a missed coastal stop or a suitable open walk. Check any alternative cave separately rather than assume it is open or interchangeable.
Day 6: move to Pico
Investigate SATA’s dated flight options first. For a ferry alternative, consult Atlânticoline for the exact date and ports, including intermediate stops and vehicle or baggage terms. Being in the central island group does not establish a daily direct Terceira-Pico boat. Do not apply the short Horta-Madalena crossing to this journey. Compare the complete door-to-door route and keep arrival afternoon unbooked. Add time or change the order if the actual connection is awkward.
Day 7: vineyard walls and a long meal
Make the basalt-walled vineyard landscape the focus of the first full Pico day. There is no need to add a summit attempt to it. The Pico full-day wine and food tour offers a full-day food-and-wine format; included pickup is limited to Madalena, with an extra charge outside that area. Match the meeting point and room address before reserving. Arrange transport or a designated driver rather than leave driving after tasting to a decision made on the day.
Day 8: Lajes do Pico, with or without a boat
Use Lajes do Pico as a coastal anchor. The Whale-watching experience from Lajes do Pico departs there rather than from Madalena, so arrange transport from your base before buying. Sightings are not guaranteed and sea conditions can cancel or move the outing. The listed boat has age and health exclusions, including limits for younger children, pregnancy and certain back or mobility conditions. Read the exact suitability rules. A land-based day is a complete choice when the boat would be uncomfortable or unsuitable.
Day 9: a reserved climb, or another Pico day
A Pico ascent is a separate demanding activity, not a casual extension of a vineyard walk. Use the official mountain reservation process, consider an accredited guide and check equipment and current conditions before setting out. The authority warns that mountain weather changes quickly and can be extreme; a reservation does not guarantee a safe summit. If the climb is unsuitable, keep the day for coast, wine heritage or a suitable open walk. The mountain does not have to be climbed for Pico to justify its place in the trip.
Day 10: departure, without a final mountain outing
Keep this day for packing, the airport or port journey and onward travel. If a separately ticketed international departure depends on an inter-island service, check the missed-connection risk and whether a buffer night is needed. An attractive fare does not turn separate tickets into one protected journey.
Where to stay and what to organise first
Use compare accommodation on Trip.com separately for each island. Match the exact address to parking, evening meals and your chosen pickup points. A boat from Lajes do Pico is not a boat from Madalena. A car gives freedom only if narrow roads and parking do not turn every outing into work. Check rental terms before assuming a vehicle can move between islands, or arrange separate rentals at each base.
Use compare flights on Kiwi.com for the entire journey, including entry into the Azores and the final departure. Settle the transfers before the hotel dates, then reserve the few activities that need it. Check baggage, connection protection and change costs. This guide quotes no live fare or room availability; transport, stays, meals and admissions remain unpriced for your dates.
Before you walk, swim or book
Check trail alerts and local weather before walking. Pick the effort that suits your group, carry water and rain protection, and never enter a closed route to preserve an itinerary. Pool visits and boat trips depend on the sea as well as the sky. Keep a land-based alternative and read the selected operator’s age, health and mobility limits.
